25.02.18 - 03.03.18 Mel Evans

Mel Evans is a freelance artist specialising in figurative works. She paints using oils in a predominantly realistic way and takes

inspiration from unusual and contrasting light and in trying to capture a feel or emotion through a look or expression. Until a

recent move to Cambridge, Mel lived and worked in Brighton. She has also exhibited in Cardiff and London and organises group

exhibitions under the name of Eine Frieda Vintage Ausstellung. The majority of her time is spent creating new exhibition pieces, however, she also undertakes private painting commissions. Mel previously completed a series of blind continuous line drawings and circle line drawings in a linear and stylised fashion, which are still available as high quality giclee prints, but has more recently been looking at the shadows thrown by bodies and how she can capture a concentrated moment in a shared experience.

Lately, Mel has come to compositionally abstract areas of a figure or figures. Using white light and the exposed stretched linen that she paints upon, she highlights the colours and positioning of the anatomy, in an attempt to capture the intimacy and memory of a moment shared or experienced. Mel has a BA Hons degree from University Wales Institute, Cardiff in Art & Aesthetics. The course comprised of fine art practice as well as philosophical and art historical theory. The conceptual debates

this course stimulated are still current in her work today.

Metal on Canvas. Solo exhibition of abstract art in real metals. Ben returns to Gallery40 with new work. Large and small paintings, found-object sculptures, affordable originals and prints for sale. Bronze, copper, iron, silver and gold, combine with shellacs, polishes, inks and washes in a rich light-responsive finish. Dark as thunder, light as a stained-glass window. Contained abstract geometry suggests planets, cityscapes, field patterns, rock-strata, the view through a microscope. Slow change over time and tipping-points.

Ben’s mind is as mercurial as his materials: explore the creative journey.

21.05.18 - 03.06.18 Edy & Bridge

Edy and Bridge was established in 2013, a label set up by Jenni and Michael, its aim to make classic, strong everyday pieces for the creatives and workers of London town. They named it after two amazing women in their lives, their Grandmas and set to work....

Michael grew up in London town, Jenni grew up on a farm in the Devonshire countryside. They both studied in London, Michael at London College of fashion, Jenni at Goldsmiths University.

They met at London’s famous Spitalfield's Market where they were both designing and making and selling their designs. They moved into a shared studio space in South London and began to collaborate. They realised their eclectic mix of urban and rural influences together with a love for vintage style, brought a refreshing freedom to their designs.

They design and make their creations in London and sell them in pop up shops around the Uk, they also sell to a selection of boutiques all over the world.

02.07.18 - 08.07.18 Frances Doherty

"My inspiration comes from flowers and plants that we see all around us, in gardens, fields even cracks in the pavement. I particularly love the secret worlds inside these flowers, in the patterns and textures hidden away that give a continuing sense of promise and renewal.

Until 2005 my work had been mainly in the domestic & functional arena, but then I decided to work on larger, often one off, sculptural pieces. So far, I have concentrated on the forms of seed pods and fruiting bodies which ties in with my earlier work, but which looks completely different.

I like to play with scale and will often imagine the size that a plant must appear to an insect...what is it about the flower that attracts or repels? Often I will scale my sculpture up so that we can have an 'insects eye view' of it."

"I work in stoneware, throwing the basic shape of the sculpture, then I alter and model onto it. This gives me a certain speed and control which is the way I prefer to work. My pieces are high fired so that they can go into an interior or exterior environment.

My glazes are chosen to compliment the form and are often slightly chrystalline or irradescent, this makes the pieces glow."

03.09.18 - 23.09.18 Les Mistons

LES MISTONS offers a selection of the finest original vintage children's clothing, mostly new old stock but also pre-loved pieces, selected with great care.

Our clothes were produced in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s (a few 80’s pieces might have made their way through the stock, it means they’re really worth it!).

The large majority of them are new and unworn (that's what we call « new old stock »). They come from old factories, shops, sample lots, individuals who kept those gems hidden for decades and made their way to us through auctions, direct sales or attic clearing. Very often, these will also still have their original tag attached.

Finding them really feels like a treasure hunt !

Some of the clothes are pre-loved but we take great care of picking the ones that are in excellent condition only. The clothing item’s detailed information will indicate if the piece is New or Pre-loved.

As for the production rules of these decades, the majority of the clothes were lovingly made within Europe and USA, with most of them being produced in France and United Kingdom.
